Gregor Scholl is the gentleman and uncrowned authority of the Berlin cocktail scene. Well-known as the stylish host in West Berlin’s Rum Trader, with Le Croco Bleu he is now venturing into the eastern half of the city to also beguile visitors with his extravagant cocktail creations here. In the brewery’s former machine room, he’ll be serving up mixtures for which he’s thought up exotic names, including the ‘Acu-Acu’ – a rum-based cocktail with almond and lemon served in a classic 1920s cocktail glass.
The name of the bar comes from a bizarre episode from the brewery’s history Scholl heard about: rumour had it that two crocodiles from the Berlin Zoo were brought to a pool in the Bötzow cellars for safekeeping at the end of World War 2.
Along with Scholl, Head-Bartender and Barmanager Phum Sila-Trakoon is stirring and shaking the drinks. Sila-Trakoon left the Bar Academy Berlin and the Katz Orange, to bring new goals to Le Croco Bleu.
With his new food-pairing concept he brings art and culinary into the glasses of his guests. As BLCC Worldchampion finalist he and his team proved creativity and pioneering work on an international scale.
Starred chef Tim Raue describes his restaurant and cooking philosophy as a triad of “creativity, uniqueness and freedom”. His food energises body and soul, so it’s hardly surprising that he’s now decided on Bötzow Berlin as the newest location for his creative work. Originally from Berlin’s Kreuzberg neighbourhood, Raue is opening his restaurant La Soupe Populaire on the premises of the former brewery in the Studio House. With changing exhibitions of interesting contemporary art, Raue will also be pampering guests starting on 17 May 2013. And since the art being served should also taste delicious, Raue will take inspiration from the various presented artworks when creating his newest delicacies. The menu of this new ‘people’s kitchen’ is simple yet exceptional, with four appetisers, four main courses and two desserts. Raue has further put together a selection of ten red wines, ten whites and a few rarities to complement the food. The cuisine is served on porcelain from KPM Berlin, the Royal Porcelain Factory, thus picking up the mundane charm and history of the building in the décor.
For decades he was a bouncer at Berlin’s most popular clubs. Now he can be found in the silver caravan and is offering the most ur-Berlin dish the local cuisine has to offer: currywurst – sausage with curried ketchup. Mario Hernandez Voigt knows how to read people and how to set a mood – and really knows good food.
The caravan is located on the premises of the former Bötzow Brewery on Prenzlauer Allee, close to Metzerstrasse. Here Voigt hopes not only to serve visitors on Bötzow, but also to serve the entire district – whether night owls or neighbours, visitors or locals, construction workers or the brave fitness adherents as they leave the neighbouring gyms after working up a sweat.
So that no one gets left standing out in the rain, the former gatehouse is being used as a shelter; the balustrade there originally comes from the villa of brewery owner Julius Bötzow that was destroyed in the Second World War and which provides a charming ramshackle ambience. And for those who’ve had enough currywurst can instead order traditional Berlin bulette – a sort of hamburger – chips or a proper white bread roll with the topping of your choice.
