How Ottobock is inventing the future in Berlin

In 1919, Otto Bock founded his Orthopädische Industrie GmbH company in the Berlin Kreuzberg district. Today, the baton has been passed through three generations to Professor Hans Georg Näder, who is now at the helm of globally active medtech company Ottobock. For more than 100 years, the company has been committed to helping people with limited mobility. As an innovation and technology leader, Ottobock actively shapes the orthopaedic technology industry and is driving digitalisation in the field. In everything the company does, people always come first. To this end, Ottobock not only digitises manufacturing processes and develops innovative products but also provides end-to-end treatment solutions. The company, which has its headquarters in Duderstadt, in the south of Lower Saxony, returned to Berlin in 2009 to open its Science Center on Potsdamer Platz and moved into its premises on the Bötzow Brewery site (Prenzlauer Berg district) in 2018.

Digitalisation

As a pioneer in the medtech industry, Ottobock is convinced that the future lies in digital transformation and artificial intelligence – from groundbreaking high-tech manufacturing processes such as industrial 3D printing through to holistic, digitised patient care processes or products with smart sensors.
The interplay of developments in the areas of computers, sensors and motors in the form of wearable human bionics opens the door to a whole new world of opportunities for users in everyday life – including activities such as jogging, cycling and swimming. The adaptive Myo Plus control enables users to control arm prostheses intuitively, by the power of thought.
Ottobock has created various digital startups to pool all the relevant expertise in interdisciplinary teams around the world and push the boundaries of digital innovation.

The Paralympic Games

Thirty years ago, four Ottobock technicians from Australia offered their services to the athletes at the 1988 Paralympic Games in Seoul. Ever since, the company has been committed to supporting paralympic sports, and teams of technicians have attended all the Paralympic Summer and Winter Games. And more than thirty years later, Ottobock is still in the starting blocks – waiting and ready to support athletes at the 2021 Paralympic Games in Tokyo.
As an official partner of the Games, Ottobock offers its repair services to all athletes free of charge. Experienced O&P professionals, wheelchair experts and expert welders ensure that equipment is repaired and serviced professionally – regardless of the athlete’s nationality, or the brand of their prosthesis, orthosis or wheelchair – paving the way for good sportsmanship and fair competition between the athletes. A passion for the Paralympics is an integral part of the company’s DNA.

Corporate Social Responsibility

For more than 100 years, Ottobock has stood for tradition and progress. In doing so, the company continually pursues its mission of not only meeting statutory standards and requirements but continually raising the benchmark.
As a producer, Ottobock is highly aware of its responsibility to the climate and to the environment. For this reason, the company regularly reviews its production processes to make them more sustainable – from developing comprehensive energy strategies, to handling resources mindfully, to using fewer materials and thus generating less waste. Sustainability has become an integral part of the corporate strategy and is anchored in all relevant areas of the company.
